TranzAlpine Scenic Railway

This morning we had an Uber driver take us to the Christchurch train station to catch the train to Greymouth on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. The train left Christchurch at 8:15, arriving in Greymouth at 1:00.

It was a beautiful trip, traveling from the east coast to the west coast of the island. Farmland, rivers, tunnels and bridges were abundant on the trip, easily viewed through the large windows at each seat. And of course the mountains were spectacular. A dining car offered drinks and food at fairly reasonable prices, and an open air car gave an opportunity to take pictures without shooting through glass windows. It was a bit chilly out there!

Once we arrived at Greymouth, we collected our bags and then picked up our rental car. We began our drive south out of town, stopping to take a look at the Tasman Sea. It took us about three hours to arrive at Franz Josef, where we are spending the night. Hopefully it will be clear enough in the morning to see the glacier.
